Clinical and Sports Massage Therapy

I am a clinical and sports massage therapist. I specialise in the treatment of chronic pain which can arise in the muscles and soft tissues. Many people suffer from chronic pain due to a number of reasons. Poor posture is the most likely cause of chronic pain because we live a more sedentary lifestyle and spend a lot of the day sitting down. Another reason is due to the repetitive use of muscles (as a result of increased use of mobile phones and computers). Finally, chronic pain can also arise following an injury.

Pain symptoms can present as a dull nagging ache, sharp stabbing pain, burning pain or a gnawing pain. It can be intermittent or constant. In addition, stiffness and reduced flexibility of the joints may also be affected. Often I find symptoms have developed over a period of time, sometimes years.

Clinical and sports massage uses a combination of techniques to treat the muscles and soft tissues in order to reduce the pain and increase the range of movement. The number of sessions can vary depending on the problem. Between 1 – 6 sessions should be sufficient although ocassionally more sessions may be needed. Once the problem is under control monthly maintenance treatment may be advised.

Some conditions we can treat include:

  • Muscle strains or ligament sprain
  • Muscle tension, spasm and stiffness
  • Herniated disc  (commonly called slipped disc)
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Sciatica / Piriformis syndrome
